How to travel from Takayama to Shirakawa-go by bus
A practical guide to reserved and “Open Seat” buses, current departure times, tickets and the correct platforms in both directions.

The easiest direct journey from Takayama to Shirakawa-go starts at the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, beside JR Takayama Station. The trip normally takes about 50 minutes. There are two kinds of service on the same route: buses marked “Reserved,” for which you should secure a seat in advance, and buses marked “Open Seat,” which do not require a reservation.
For a reserved bus, book online or ask at the Nohi Bus Center ticket counter. For an Open Seat bus, buy your ticket at the counter or ticket machine and line up early: seats are first come, first served, and a place is not guaranteed when a bus is full. The adult fare is ¥2,800 each way, so a Takayama–Shirakawa-go round trip costs ¥5,600 in total.

From Takayama, the reservation-free Open Seat departures are 8:50, 10:50, 11:50, 13:50, 14:50, 17:50 and 19:00. The 19:00 bus does not operate on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, August 13–15 or December 29–January 3. Reserved departures are 7:20, 7:50, 8:10, 9:35, 11:20, 12:10, 12:50, 13:10, 13:20, 14:30, 16:20 and 16:30.
At Takayama Nohi Bus Center, buses for Shirakawa-go depart from platform 4. Check the electronic board and the sign at the platform because several destinations use the same boarding area. Arrive with enough time to buy your ticket and join the correct queue, especially during weekends, holidays and the winter season.

The return journey begins at Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal. Reservation-free Open Seat departures for Takayama are 6:43, 10:55, 13:15, 15:15, 16:15 and 17:30. Reserved departures are 9:35, 10:05, 10:30, 11:10, 11:40, 12:35, 13:30, 14:00, 14:45, 15:45, 16:35 and 17:25.
At Shirakawa-go, board the bus back to Takayama from platform 3. The timetable beside the platform labels each service as Reserved or Open Seat, so confirm the label as well as the departure time before joining the line.

A simple plan is to reserve both journeys when your schedule is fixed. If reserved buses are sold out, the Open Seat services give you another way to travel without advance booking—just allow extra time to queue. Keep the return departure in mind before walking into the village, since Shirakawa-go becomes very busy and later buses can fill quickly.
These times were checked against Nohi Bus’s official timetable in September 2026. Schedules, platforms and operating-day restrictions can change, and weather or road conditions may cause delays, so check the official timetable and the terminal display again on the day you travel.
